Garage Company: Why India need a fundamental change to boost innovation?

Amazon, Apple, Disney, Google, Harley and HP; do you know one factor common between these corporates? If you haven’t guessed already, all these and numerous other companies are started in a garage. It is not so rare in India, though starting in garage may not be so frequent but definitely many start-up in India are developed with one or two co-founders with a home office setup. If you are wondering, why this is a discussion now then you should read further.

India and her advantage:

Have you ever wondered about the innovation index of India? India is now in sixty-sixth position as per GII. Why are we so behind many other countries in the world? There are several factors which our country need to address to boost in-house innovation and reduce brain drain.

India is one of the youngest country in the world. It is because of her young generation with an average age of 28 years Even though population explosion is considered as a curse, this now could be turned into a boon if the country invest in our youngsters.

Bookish childhood and its vicious effects:

India has over 315 million students and this makes India to be the country with most students in the world. If this community is moulded enough to meet the innovative needs of the country, India would never need to look back.

However, biggest challenge every Indian students facing is the over protectionism of their parents. My parents never allowed me to work or make money, since they felt that my only job is to study and I was often reminded of my future responsibilities. This is not just my case, but around sixty percentage of average middle class Indian students, because their parents don’t want their kids to be struggling as they did during their childhood.

Kids in United States are encouraged to handle or make money by taking employment during their school vacation. This includes small chores to selling lemonade and this is graciously done even by the daughter of POTUS 44, Obama. In contrast, rich and super rich of India don’t even let their kids even to mingle with other people.

A middle class Indian student does not concentrate on sports or some ways of making or handling money since they are allowed to do only one task, which is to pass the exams and get more mark than their neighbourhood kids. This would eventually make the youngsters to be prepared to become an employee than an employer

Educational System in India

Present Indian education system is creating robots who are well trained to be employed in India unless you are either in IIT’s or top ten colleges in each state. In the 1.5 million engineers passing out, 1 million decides their career goals after engineering. They get satisfied by becoming anyone from bank manager to a Call Centre associate of an MNC.

Most of these colleges today employs teaching staff who might have chosen this job since they either did not get recruited into a big company or does not possess any interest in learning the nuances of his/ her field. The students in these colleges are never educated to deal real world problems, get industrial exposure except a two hour presentation in any IT company in their 5 days tour which has its pet name as “Industrial Visits”

Last opportunity for the student is to participate in semester project during their final year. This is either purchased for mere 3K-5K INR and these colleges establish contracts with private organization to provide their students with readymade projects including documentation.

This will never allow students to think as an entrepreneur or find solutions to the problems that exist today. Interacting with several citizens in United States, their education system help them decide their future and it very common to see software engineers choose the different field from photographers to Social Media experts. Indian professionals can never take such decisions since they are never trained to do so and also because of the huge disparity in payments.

Start-up and Social Ecosystem

Students who don’t get through ‘campus’ or ‘of-campus’ interviews or those who fail miserably in their exams end up working for low wages and eventually take their clients to establish their own organizations. It is always the left overs and extremely passionate end up developing ideas and creating their companies. The former struggle by doing service for their clients and later are the ones who come up with industry changing ideas or innovations through their students start-ups.

Another factor which does not allow people think beyond being employed is social acceptance. Entrepreneurship is a taboo even today for parents, society and marriage market. Dual Employment and Indian Labour Laws

Apart from ‘Section 60 of Factories Act, 1948’ which does not allow a person work on two different factories on the same day, there are no laws which restricts from doing what you like. However, both Public and Private sectors in India doesn’t allow a person to get engaged in another employment or dedicate themselves in another activity which may credit them financially. Indian Court also has favoured the organization who terminated their employees for getting engaged in dual employment. These are often defined by the terms and conditions of the offer letter provided by the company during the time of employment.

This is where most of the world class innovators has merits on. They are allowed to chase their passion without affecting their jobs schedule, even while playing key roles of their employers. This will help them to meet their responsibilities and does not prevent them creating solution for the problems they come across.

What can we do for a better tomorrow

Today the start-up ecosystem is much changed when compared to five years before. With Angel Investors, Venture Capitalist flooding in the market, anyone with a decent idea and a practical business plan has an opportunity to explore the entrepreneurial world. Both central and state governments are promoting entrepreneurs and they have realized the role of start-ups in the country.

However, things needs to be changed in the root level. There should be less of red-tapes and difficulties in getting permissions and business loans. Students should be trained to meet the changing world and make them aware of the threat todays automated world is throwing at them.

Organizations should promote in-house entrepreneurs and 50 year old laws should be rewritten to meet todays need. If an employee does not compromise the security, affect their performance in their day to day activities and ownerships, they should be allowed to chase any dreams they have. This would create much better people who will be trained to take risk without worrying about the risk associated with it.

Global organization are either established or at the door to serve India because they know her potential. It is now the government, educationalist, institutions and organization along with each individual of the country start working from the bottom up and create a glorious future for the generations to come.
