Xiaomi is not so new entrant into India. They are quiet familiar with those who do online shopping . Their few flagship phones are Redmi Note, Redmi 2, MI 4 and the list goes on. I am sure that they had changed the sales and marketing view of entire Indian Smart Phone manufacturers those where manufacturing budget phones including Micromax, Xolo and the endless list.
First announced exclusively through FlipKart, Xiaomi offered highly advanced phones with great spec to customer with one fourth of the price against global players. No doubts the techie and non techie smartphone lovers moved to Xiaomi. Mi Band is yet another step Xiaomi to tap the wearable device market in India.
Apart from few smart watches and bands, wearable device market is still unexplored in India. First thing is the exorbitant price tag attached and second one is its need. Do we need a wearable at all, when we are already hooked to the smartphone than ever? Unlike several other players like Samsung, Apple who had launched display smart watches, not much of it can make any change to the customer mind in India.
Xiaomi shook the industry by announcing a wearable wrist band for a cost of Rs 999, which was unimaginable before its announcement. Udayam purchased it to explore it more and details along with installation, tracking and verdict is for your further read.
MI Band works on Bluetooth Low Energy (BLE) which tracks every movement of you including sleeping. When I got this delivered, I was so excited to see what is inside. To make the unboxing video, I had to control my eagerness to do so. Well packed piece of MIBand is what I received from Xiaomi. Unlike previous flash sales, this time Xiaomi was selling it directly through their resellers than announcing it through partner sites like Flipkart. Processing and Shipment was amazing, but I had wait for couple of days to receive the packet since their courier partners were not shipping it in Kerala.
Opening up the cover, I saw a little more than a capsule sized aluminium covered sensor. Further search revealed a Band which is made of Dow Corning TPSiV (whatever it is, a sturdy rubber like bracelet material).
Mi Band Core:
The MI Band Core is claimed to be Military Grade Sensor which can stay upto 30 days without charging. One of the great features of MI Band Core is that it is water and dust proof. You can wear it everywhere, even while swimming. Band Core will remain water resistant even at a depth 1 meter below water is what I read. Apart from the polycarbonate back and leds, the Band Core is equipped with accelerometer. Connectivity is based on Bluetooth 4.0 and is compatible with any android device with android 4.4 or above. Unlocking feature is available only on Lollipop devices or MIUI based devices. It comes with tiny usb charger cable which you can insert the core and plug it to the charger. This is compatible with IOS/Apple Devices also with MI App.
Why do we need MI Band?
Trust me, you don’t need it unless you really like every movement off yours need to be tracked. The spec itself says that the core doesn’t have anything apart from an accelerometer which now a days comes with every other android smart phone. I have a Galaxy S4 which comes with Samsung Native App which tracks everything I do including steps count, calories. With GPS, it can even capture my cycling Map well and calories burned and the details covers the area map, calories burned, everything. After cycling, I take a selfie with full sweat and cycling gear and save that information for future reference. Trust me it’s awesome.
Then what made me purchase this? That reason along with verdict comes down.
MI Fit is the app used to track our movements and here I am using my S4 for review. If someone needs an IPhone installation support, please feel free to share it in the comments section. I can make one or you.
- Search for MI Fit in Google Play
- Download and install it in the phone.
- Sign in with your MI account, if you don’t have one create it
- Once done you will get into MI Fit app.
- Give your name
- Select Gender and Date of Birth
- Height in centimeters
- Weight in Kilograms (Wow, don’t worry about mine )
- Set the goals, it is advisable to have minimum goal to 8000 steps which is equivalent to 45 minutes exercise
- Pair it with your band.
- That’s it, get started.
First it will update the band with the data. Make sure that the band is close to you while updating and it will show the current data. Few help files including explanation is given in the app.
So, after a while I had 3000+ steps. Apart from this app shows the charge of band. You can find the band, set the band color, set incoming call notification, etc. Moreover you can post your stats in FB Twitter, we chat, etc.
Data can be used to compare with previous days to check how well you are doing. It stores almost a year’s data is what I read in some other tech sites.
Using this feature, you can unlock the phone without keying in the PIN when you have band in your wrist. This feature works only in Android 5 or latest and does not work properly with Samsung due to their customization in android. Before smart unlock MIBand need to be added as a trusted device in security > Smart Lock
This is a wonderful feature of MI Band which analyses your sleep and gives in depth details of it including deep sleep data. Even this data can be published in social media.
Apart from my curiosity there are few things I really like about MI Band.
- Unlike smartphone which you keep aside while you reach home , this remains tied up in the wrist.
- You can wear it anywhere you want including swimming pool.
- Sleep pattern is analysed and this is really important for a healthy life style
- Smart alarm which will wake you up by vibration, call alert are some excellent features of MI Band.
Display less MI Core is a concern, but doesn’t bother me since I am not really interested in real time notification as FB, Email from Flipkart is not something which I give important to be alerted. Audio pause might be future I would like to have, so that if I pause it, the music player in my phone should pause. If you are fitness conscious or gadget freak (not necessary to be Fitness Freak) you will love this.
- App doesn’t allow export of data, which I read there are few workaround
- Doesn’t track my cycling, so I will still need to carry my phone while cycling.
- Though elegant, black rubberized bracelet gives a substandard look? How about a metal band?
- To charge, I need to remove the core which I feel soon make the band opening large.
